Chapter 30

“What if Tatiana wasn’t the target?” Detective Stone said, shuffling through papers at her desk. She and Detective Bordeaux were sorting through notes, photographs, and interview transcripts. Well, she was, as Bordeaux doodled on the giant whiteboard he had bought as soon as he had been promoted to detective, because apparently he had watched too much television and thought solving a murder required at least a few dozen lines of marker script.

“Hmm?” Bordeaux said, dashing off another column, this one labeled ‘Suspects.’

“What if Tatiana wasn’t the target of the poisoning? What if it was someone else? Her drink was likely poisoned, wasn’t it? And a lot of them were drinking wine. If her glass got switched…”

“But that doesn’t make any sense,” Bordeaux said, frowning. “She was having an affair—”

“Allegedly.”

“What are you, a lawyer? Allegedly, she was having an affair with John Eastwick Sr. And then she gets an equal share of his estate as his wife and kid does. If that’s not motive enough for murder, I don’t know what is.”

“Assuming the wife or the kid did it.”

“You don’t think they did?”

Detective Stone bit her pen. She could see the noose slipping around Mrs. Eastwick, and the woman certainly hadn’t done herself any favors in the interview. She had by turns been defensive, spacey, and resigned.

“I know they’re sympathetic,” Bordeaux said kindly. “That doesn’t mean they’re clean. Sometimes good people do awful things.”

Detective Stone knew it, but it didn’t make it any easier to bear that truth.
